Pilgrimage In the journey through life toward a more "pure" or "holy" state, we let go of baggage, negative emotions, unforgiveness, etc. The sun represents the thing moved toward in this pilgrimage, a purifier that burns off all the impurities once carried. The technique is wet into wet crumpled watercolor, and there are a few random bits of what appear to be white specs indicating elements of pure light, truth and holiness encountered on the journey. |
The Shelter We Give In the love and comfort of friends and family, shelter and shade from the hard realities of life are found. Portions of human figures morph with leafless tree branches, while nestled beneath, a vulnerably exposed woman rests confidently and peacefully in the complete safety and protection of love. |
Surreal Teen Life On the left, the paint is neatly contained in the outlined ink forms, but on the right, the paint is blown out of its boundary lines. Repressed and wildly expressed emotions are thus depicted along with the sometimes-angry, conflicted mind trying to navigate the journey to adulthood, as references to childhood treats and playthings float past. |
Birthday Party The cylinder, cone and sphere take on playful colors and are surrounded by loose references to cakes, candy, balloons, games and hands grabbing for spilled piñata contents. All are reminiscent of a time when a life is annually celebrated on the anniversary of one’s arrival in the world - a “Birthday”. |
Field of Dreams In dreams proportions and sequences are irrationally ordered. The foreground landscape is detailed in crisp focus, while the middle ground plants are tiny and show proportional perspective. However when the flowers appear in the unfocused background, they are gigantic, of tree-like magnitude. Suddenly the perfectly proportioned field takes on irrational proportions. It is not scary however; the dreamlike quality is one of playful, peaceful slumber in soft pastels, achieved through wet on wet puddling. |
Backache Heartache A fractured tree-trunk with a heavy human head on top represent the times when the pain and brokenness of life is so great that you can barely hold up your head. All you can do is cry a lake of tears and hope for a better day. |

Whirlwinds of Life Vortexes of differing depths, capturing light from opposing angles represent various elements of a person’s life, all spinning out of control. At the same time, it appears that everything is being sucked into the center of a larger vortex, representing how everyone has felt at one time or another. |
Falling Particles Daydreaming, staring off in the distance, unfocused on any particular object, sunlit dust particles take on new beauty. |
Sure of Our Flag Transposed on an out-of-control scene is the now-popular image of firefighters raising our flag. The unfinished appearance represents time when we really did not and still do not know how much our world had changed or would change. The bootless, footless firefighters represent loss, missing pieces, and unanswered questions. But one thing is sure; our flag still stands for freedom. |
