My soft strong soft boughs are full

With Spring-green leaflings and blossoms

Tender, vulnerable, new and beautiful...

My leafy boughs are full

With growing fruit

Ripening in Summer’s warmth...

I am a tree

Colorful and maturing in Autumns’s glow

With bees hastening to taste

The first fallen sweetness offered...

I am a tree

My stripped bare boughs have captured

The quiet weight of Winter’s snow

Covered with icy glaze and sunlit prisms..

My branches are loving arms

To carry and hold the ones who come to climb and swing

I shelter them as they sit beneath me

In a soft nest of fallen or plucked leaves...

I am a tree

With heavy boughs

Full of the cares of life

And the joys of life

And the seasons of life...

My boughs bend, but never break

My support structure, my roots run very deep

To underground springs, my life source.

Artist’s Statement

I depict trees in my artwork as metaphors for the lives of individuals. The trunk represents the core of their being, who they are at heart. The roots are their beliefs, their support structure, the things that keep them grounded. Each branch represents the many aspects of a person’s life; their career, their family, their possessions, their relationships, and the shelter and shade they give to others. Organic and abstract shapes in tree branches illustrate transformation, not just once but many times in a person’s life as they must reinvent themselves, change and grow continually throughout life. Even broken branches become part of the beauty and design.
